Flour and Iron
Florence Miller, the baker's daughter, has lit her father's oven at two every morning since she was eleven. She is engaged to Robert Farrier, the farrier's apprentice and son at the forge across the crossroads, who has loved her since he was nine. Back then, Laurence, heir to the timber-riche House of Eastvale, comes back to the village. He was cut off from her six years ago, and the oak by the stream still has their initials carved in it. Laurence spends the summer watching her shutters from under the Lion's Pride stable eaves. Meanwhile, his family has arranged his betrothal to Lady Amelia Ashworth, who sees far more than he does.
The story is set in Goldshire, in Elwynn Forest, across one year from high summer to the next. The Kingdom of Stormwind is at peace. We move through the village's working places: the baker's long sycamore table, the forge, the Westbrook garrison bread run, the Eastvale logging camp and its winter crew, and the kitchen of the house on the hill. It ends with a spring wedding at Northshire Abbey.
