What She Kept
Bastion cast Haniel out for keeping the one thing it told her to give up. She falls burning through the roof of Exulien's hall during the anima drought, carrying more light than his starving court has seen in a year. He catches her bare-handed and lets it burn him, then tells the room that whatever falls into his hall is his. Haniel answers by turning her back on him. She won't speak to him or say his name, though she learns the names of his dredgers and gives his food away to the kitchen staff.
Meanwhile, the light she brought from Bastion is turning inward and killing her. Exulien knows how that ends, because he fell from Bastion too, long before he became anyone's Grace. What he doesn't know is how to save a woman who won't ask him for anything and who has every reason not to.
Set in Revendreth, in the Shadowlands, during the anima drought and before the champions of Azeroth arrive. A story from The Hearth-Rooms collection.
